The Good, The Bad, The Ugly in Memory Foam Mattresses for Arthritis and Fibromyalgia

My husband and I previously had a California King Sleep Number Bed for 17 years and as we got older, we began to have back and neck issues on top of my Fibromyalgia and Arthritis, so we knew it was time for a replacement mattress. I have been looking for months now and decided to go with the Zinus Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Memory Foam 10 Inch Mattress (queen) based on reviews and the company’s description of the bed.

That said, here is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly parts of this product!

THE GOOD
Very easy to set up. Simply open the box, set the mattress out on the platform, and let it expand for an hour or so. The fullness should set in within 24 hours. It was the perfect size for the Zinus Modern Studio 10 Inch Platforma Low Profile Bed Frame / Mattress Foundation / Boxspring Optional / Wood slat support (Queen) and I am happy with the platform.

THE BAD
The most important part was that the bed was SO EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE! I have Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthristis and my husband has a bad lower back problems – he gets Military Veterans disability for back and feet issues and sleep apnea PLUS he has to work odd shifts at a heavy cement plant – so sleep in very important to both of us. It was rock solid after fully expanding! Ultima Comfort?? Where?? Well I should have research more about density and thickness with memory foam mattresses, but now I know! I would highly recommend researching more about Memory Foam Mattress Thickness and Density before making a purchase.

THE UGLY
The smell was the most outrageous smell ever! And it made me sick to my stomach! My husband and two of our teens have high functioning Autism, so smell is a big thing to them and it really bothered them tremendously as well. However, it did go away after a few days and I did buy an air purifier and Himalayan Salt lamp to purify the air and odor, so that might have helped. But it really stinks!!

THE RESULTS
The Zinus Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Memory Foam 10 Inch Mattress (Queen) was a poor choice for me and my husband. I know “you get what you pay for” and the reviews were positive, so I thought I’d give it a chance, but I’d rather sleep on my air mattress than this thing! That said, I am giving it a chance. I will be getting the Full Size 3 Inch Thick, 4 Pound Density Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattress Pad Bed Topper to see if that will help eleviate some discomfort. If that doesn’t help, I’ll be sending the bed back even if I have to wrap the sucker in cardboard and have the UPS guy come pick it up.

At any rate, I wouldn’t count the company out as I might try another one of their mattresses (if I can find something more PLUSH), but the Zinus Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Memory Foam 10 Inch Mattress, Queen was one of those LIFE Lessons “if I knew then what I know now” moments!

Do you have Fibromyalgia? Arthritis or back pain? What kind of mattress do you find most comforting for you?

we JUST got our foam mattress this weekend. I have a curved spine, probably have arthritis (all the symptoms are there, just haven’t had a diagnosis), and severe back pain. My husband has pinched nerves and back pain- we went for an ultra firm foam mattress. It’s an experience getting adjusted to this mattress, but still only 2 nights in. hoping for the best- the mattress people suggested firm beds for bad backs and think this will be the cure for us.. might add a layer of foam to my side though! eek.

I am right there with you momma! It definitely takes some getting used to. I am going out to get a topper today and will let you know how that worked for me. This getting older stuff is a pain in the neck! (pun intended!) LOL!
